Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up as an only child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to be a high school English teacher. After three years of being an aide to the teacher and a student, her dream to become a high school English teacher was cut short. Her career began by doing live performances of poems as well as the work of her own. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was an actor on The Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She was hired by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
